The Ballad of a Small Player describes the very curious scenes in a world of casino culture. You may find this as fascinating as I did. It draws you in before you realize it. Lord Doyle is an epicurean character who can hold your attention amid the descriptive prose as easily as he can maintain his own composure at the gaming tables. Indeed, in the classic sense, he is the tragic hero of a well told ballad. Osborne’s novel is sharp, well written, and presents interesting metaphors related to the superstitions of the Chinese and the gamblers who play on their turf.
