Amy and Nick were once a happily married couple, but layoffs and a move from New York City to North Carthage, Missouri, has put an undeniable strain on their relationship.  When Amy goes missing on their fifth anniversary, Nick is the prime suspect.  In chapters written from Nick’s perspective, Nick sets out to prove his innocence, though it is unclear if he is, in fact, innocent.  In alternating chapters taken from Amy’s journal, Amy writes about the beginnings of her relationship and what happened to make everything go downhill.  But in both stories, it soon turns out that all is not what it seems…

This is a book that is hard to talk about without giving away all the best parts, but I can at least say that I loved that no matter what I thought was going on in this novel, I was wrong in one way or another.  Not many books can keep me guessing like that.  The characters, too, were difficult to pin down, with their emotions and reasons for doing things just as unclear as the rest of the story.  But eventually Flynn pulls everything together and gives the reader and ending that makes sense, in terms of the story and what’s happened, if it doesn’t exactly satisfy a craving for a neat and tidy ending.
