In some ways, Flash Boys reads like a suspense thriller. As with many good novels, it moves quickly as you become involved with the stories. It is non-fiction with the potency of hard liquor, by the same author who gave us Boomerang, Moneyball, and Liar’s Poker. These stories of individual characters centered on a world of “high-frequency” trading are true. It’s fascinating, it can take you off balance, and it needs to be considered in perspective, as the fiber-optic-network, speed-of-light, stock-trading-in-a-millisecond world of big black boxes and very eager, crafty businessmen unfolds before your eyes. It is a book about Wall Street banks, dark pools, small exchanges, trading shops, and a stock market war of robots. Not entirely demoralizing, as its protagonists band together and take risks to do what they believe is right, it still might take your breath away.
