This book is absolutely fascinating to a middle-class white girl like myself. Kwan does a great job of taking a large group of fabulously wealthy people and making them all distinguishable from each other – some flaunt their wealth, some hoard it, some do a little of both, but all of them judge the way everyone else does it. With several narrators throughout the novel, we get to see all of these points of view shared at party after party after party thrown by one relative or another. There are some serious discussions about wealth and how it affects those born into it, but the book is never completely serious. This is definitely a book to pick up when you need a break from “real” life.
