It’s the middle of World War II, and a British operative has been captured by the Nazis in France.  To the consternation of her fellow prisoners, this operative has chosen to give up all the important information she can think of in exchange for warm clothing and the ink and paper she uses to write her story.  But as we read her confessions, they soon veer off into a history of her best friend, Maddie, the pilot who dropped her off in France and who died shortly after in a crash.  But of course, this is war, and both sides are keeping secrets from the other.  Is our hero really the coward she says she is?

I absolutely adored this book, which started off a bit slow and almost boring but then saved itself with a well-timed reveal and a race to the end.  I also liked that, unlike most other World War II novels that I’ve read in my life, it focused on a military protagonist and talked about the strategic and political side of the war rather than the persecution side.  And, as a bonus, it had female protagonists who proved their awesomeness early on and never lost it.  A must-read for anyone with a sense of adventure and loyalty.
