In this collection is one of my favorite Christmas stories. A curmudgeonly newspaper editor, along with a young, idealistic reporter, sets out to judge entries for the Annual Christmas Outdoor Lighting Competition. The characters are portrayed in all their virtues, vice, and ridiculousness. To top it off, Vonnegut gives you the sense this may be exactly what is going on in your own city or small town, and that may be what makes these stories so hilarious. Vonnegut makes a typically detestable character seem endearing, and the most innocent character questionable, if not sinister. Because this is a collection of unpublished work, there are occasions when the prose is a little unpolished and story endings a little vague. But one thing is certain, these stories are funny.
